The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture opened on September 24, 2016. The 400,000 square-foot-building stands five levels above ground, has four levels below and includes numerous exhibition galleries, an education center, a theater, café and store.

Itinerary

 Day 1 THUR 08 Jun 2017 – Departure (Depart at 9:50am)

A flight from St. Louis to Washington, DC. Upon arrival, we’ll transfer to our hotel and check in. This evening, enjoy a welcome dinner followed by a magical tour of Washington DC visiting the monuments and memorials at night. (D)

Day 2 FRI 09 Jun 2017

img_1012After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll visit the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture with our “Timed Passes”. You’ll have a full day to explore the many collections, galleries and exhibits of the museum. The average visit is four hours so put on your walking shoes. You’ll have the balance of the day free to either visit every corner of the museum or explore other sights in Washington, DC. (B)

 

Day 3 SAT 10 Jun 2017

After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll tour Washington, DC’s Black History, visiting the Frederick Douglas Home, African American Civil War Memorial and Museum, Howard University and more. Lunch is at the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl, a DC landmark. (B, L)img_0774

African Americans have been a significant part of Washington, DC’s identity since the city was first declared the new national capital in 1791. By 1900 Washington had the largest percentage of African Americans of any city in the nation. The African American Heritage Trail of Washington DC has over 200 sites that are important in local and national history and culture. Today we’ll explore a few of them.

 

Day 4 SUN 11 Jun 2017

On this free day, you can have breakfast at the hotel at your leisure and enjoy the day exploring Washington, DC. This evening we’ll come together for our last night in Washington, DC for our Farewell dinner. (B, D)

 

Day 5 MON 12 Jun 2017 (Arrive at 9:20pm)

Breakfast at hotel. We bid our farewell to DC and return home. (B)

All persons on the list have already committed to go on the trip and are only looking to add a roommate to reduce the cost.
