Are You Clear On Clear?

Are You Clear On Clear?

I was at an airport and their TSA PreCheck lane was closed so I had to go through the general security lane and that line was so long I was at risk of missing my flight.

I glanced over and saw the Clear kiosks and lane that had a Clear path to the head of the security line. Of course, my interest was peaked. At that time they were offering a trial period to try it out with immediate access. I found out why millions are using this speedy service. Although I couldn’t secure my identification on the spot, I was walked to the head of the line anyway.

What is Clear and how does it work?

Clear is a company that uses biometrics allowing individuals to identify themselves in seconds with the scan of a finger or eye instead of using traditional ID documents. These distinct characteristics are the most accurate forms of ID. CLEAR transforms your biometrics into an encrypted code

Clear kiosks and lanes are currently available across the U.S. at 40 + locations.

Since biometrics are unique codes, Clear users are able to head straight to bag screening and metal detectors.

What happens at the airport

Clear members use dedicated Clear Lanes where you will also find a Clear Ambassador who will help you scan either their fingerprint or eye and their boarding pass.

The Clear traveler is then taken to the front of the security screening line.

What is the Clear Cost?

Clear membership is for airports is $179 annually for one individual and up to three family members for $50 per year. Some miles programs offer either complimentary or reduced rates.

Enrolling in Clear

You can sign up for Clear at the airport kiosk with the assistance of a Clear Ambassador in just a few minutes and start using it right away upon completing enrollment. You’ll need ID like a U.S. state issued ID, U.S. passport, U.S. passport card, permanent resident card or U.S. military ID. Then you’ll take your biometrics, (a fingerprint, an eye scan) and a photo to create a profile.

Here’s the tricky part, you’ll need to answer a few questions to verify identity. The system will find associations of you and your relatives, places you’ve lived and othe identifiers. Some I didn’t remember because it was about my nephew and I didn’t know all of his whereabouts. You may have to try a few times but if after a few, you’ll be locked out.

TSAPrecheck vs Clear

Both are quicker ways to get through security and require advance approval. Clear, using biometrics sends you straight to bag screening while PreCheck is scanned by an agent. Clear members using regular lanes must take off shoes, belts, and other items from their carry-on but can also have access to the PreCheck lane where they don’t have to. Bottom of Form
