Airports, in general, can be a daunting experience, add the holiday travel season and your stress meter goes to an all time high. Consider these airport tips to make your holiday travel more cheerful.
Make your luggage stand out!
Get a luggage spotter for the handle of your bag or a belt that goes around your luggage in a bright color. Not only will it be easier for you to spot, it will reduce the chances of mistaken identity.
Avoid wearing large or a lot of jewelry!
Jewelry can set off the alarm going through security. If it does you’ll have to take it off and then remember to pick it up on the other side – I’ve left a few pair myself. If you have to take it off, do so in advance and place it in your hand luggage to avoid delays and leaving it at the security checkpoint.
Get TSA precheck!
You may still have time to do it. Unless you’re randomly chosen, having TSA Precheck allows you to keep your shoes and belts on and your toiletries and portable devices stay inside your bag. A huge time saver!
Sign up for alerts!
When you sign up for alerts with the airline you’re traveling on they will notify you of any flight changes when they happen and when it’s time to check-in. Also, check on your flight at least 48 hours before your scheduled time and before you leave home. I can’t tell you how many times this has saved me from surprises.
Save your money!
Avoid buying overpriced water and food and bring an empty water bottle to fill up at the fountain and bring your own snacks. Don’t worry, you can bring food through security as long as it’s not a liquid or cream more than 3.4 ounces.
Go over the airport process with your children!
I don’t travel with children but, I see parents struggling all the time. Speaking to parents with small children, I’ve gotten the following advice: Go through the process with them in advance so they’ll know what to expect. Make sure they get plenty of rest in advance and don’t forget entertainment and snacks for them. Children tend to get cranky and hard to handle when they are tired, bored and hungry.
Give yourself one extra hour!
Arrive at the airport early. This time of year, you can expect heavy traffic, full parking lots and long lines everywhere!
Just repeat to yourself or sing it, if it helps, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year”!
