As we continue the conversation on traveling in the time of COVID-19, I want to stress the importance of time when getting your COVID-19 Test.
It’s crucial to notice the language. When the requirements are stated in hours and not days, you must coordinate your test according to the hours. This means your flight departure time is critical to the time you take the COVID-19 test.
For example, if your flight departs at 10 pm on February 15th, your test (when the sample is collected) must occur after 10 pm on February 12th. I would also caution against testing too close to the time and alternatively waiting until the last minute. Give yourself some leeway within that 72 hours period.
Other items of importance to note:
- Verify the turnaround time of getting your test results. This is especially crucial for COVID testing that is required to return to the US that is now required 24 hours prior to departure. Fortunately, a Rapid test is accepted which typically yields faster results.
- Map out in advance where and when you’ll get tested for both your departure and return.
- Many sites, attractions, venues and restuarants may require testing for entry and some differ for vaccinated travelers. This too must be navigated at your destination
- Notify the testing facility that you are getting the test for travel. This is important for the information that is provided on the results which must include the date and time the specimen was collected as well as the negative result.
- The result will be emailed to you. Download the copy to your mobile device and have a printed copy.
- Some travel Apps will allow for upload of your traveldocuments, including vaccination status and COVID test results. Some willl also store your information in a secure way and provide a QR Code.
Yes, it seems like a lot but after managing COVID testing for myself and our groups, knowing before your go and being prepared reduces the stress. Add these items to your traveler’s checklist!
Happy and safe travels!
