Not only is it a new year, but it’s also a new decade! It’s a time when we take stock of our lives and resolve to make changes or embark on new adventures. While “travel more” is typically at the top of many new year resolutions, 2020 symbolizes focus and clarity. It is therefore why I’ve composed a list to set your sights on specific travel goals and resolutions for the new year and decade.
First, organize!
Visit your frequent traveler rewards with airlines, hotels and rental car companies. Determine the ones you use most often and make sure you’re maximizing your usage and benefits. Check activity and supplement where necessary to avoid losing points. Check for any cross-promotions or earning potential and register accordingly.
Check your credit cards. Credit cards are a great way to earn points and keep your accounts active. The top three on most lists are Capital One Venture, Bank of America Travel Rewards Visa and Chase Sapphire Reserve. Honorable mention is American Express Gold Business. If you’re looking to get any of these, compare them for miles earned, bonus miles for signing up and the annual fee. Your credit cards also provide other benefits like baggage fees on select airlines, early check-in, late check out, additional amenities and travel insurance.
Take inventory, clean up and replace toiletry bag items. A seasoned traveler has a toiletry bag ready to go. Take inventory to see what you’re low on, what you never use and what’s missing. Of course, your basics like shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, facial products, body lotion, body wash, razor, shower cap, comb, brush, etc. Make sure you have your go-to brands and hit the cosmetics counter for samples and the toiletry section at the drug store.
RX Bag: I never take a trip without it. All the things you may need should the common illnesses occur. Believe me, you never want to not have it when you need it. You can check out my OTC Travelers Checklist here.
Luggage: Did your luggage meet your needs last year? If not, replace it. I love pockets, one that expands and is a spinner for better organization. check the zippers, closures, for any cracks or tears. Do you need supplemental pieces or new pieces? If you’re buying new luggage, I find there’s no longer a need to buy the complete set, especially one that has those extra-large pieces. I never use a large 28in. + size. It’s better to invest in a carry-on, a 24in. bag for those longer trips, a foldable duffel for extras and a good day bag.
Check your Passport. Too many times we only look at our passport when we’re about to travel and then, it may be too late or costly. Most countries today require a blank visa page or two for entry. Do you have enough pages in your passport book? What is the expiration date? If it’s close or less than six months, it’s best to renew it. A number of countries require that your passport has at least six months validity beyond the date of return. If you are renewing your passport, opt for double pages. You can no longer add pages to an existing passport.
While you’re checking your passport make sure you have at least two passport size photos in case you visit a country that requires a visa.
Do you have basic travel needs? These are items like travel size umbrella, shoe bags, chargers, portable devices, adapters, a luggage scale, multiple outlet electrical plug and cleansing cloths.
Now that your organized, let’s make some resolutions!
Now Resolve!
A place and time for rejuvenating, relaxing and recalibrating. Take care of your mind, body, and spirit. It could be a new place or a favorite.
Somewhere you’ve always wanted to go! Even if it doesn’t happen this year, put it on your list and set a date for it.
Do something new! Where ever you travel to, find a new interest. There are a number of ways you can add to your travels for a new experience. This could be a cooking class, learning a new language, going off the beaten path, staying in a unique property, doing something adventurous, traveling solo, trying new cuisines, immersing yourself in a culture of connecting with a local for a day. The sky is the limit on this one. Finish the sentence: I’ve always wanted to ____ or I wonder what ____ is like?
Disconnect for at least one day! No phone calls, no emails, no texting!
If you have a bad travel habit, lose it! What are examples of bad travel habits? Overpacking, not signing up for frequent rewards, not trying new things-especially food, saying no to a new experience!
